King Phillip
In case you didn’t notice, Phil Lynott is held in great esteem on this here blog. Maybe it’s his badass delivery, maybe it’s his racial composition, maybe it’s from the time half us Whisperers shared some brews under a starry Michigan night sky as “Cowboy Song” played from the 3BMB speakers, Probably it’s because Phil just brings it.
You might say he can do no wrong.
And then you listen to this cut off his first solo album Solo in Soho.
I’m not sure what Phil had planned with this solo project. From the Wiki screed, sounds like Phil just had some studio time to kill so why not invite over all your pals (“Hey, who told Huey Lewis he could come? Oh alright.”) and press the results.
The results are a mixed bag with this song standing out as the mutt of a very mutty mess. I don’t post this because it’s good. I post it because it’s had me scratching my head ever since shuffle snuck it into my ears this week.
Is it terrible? Is it a joke? What’s the yellow pearl? Did Phil predict autotune? Is it possible that he can sing over any old crap and I’ll end up enjoying it? Really? It was a theme to Top of the Pops?
Draw your own conclusions and see if your mom will put them on the fridge.
